What
happens during a therapy session? |
|
THE LIVING ROOM |
A
therapy session
consists primarily of a therapeutic conversation. It appears to be normal
conversation but is strategic to the issues involved. During our initial session
we'll discuss what is troubling you and how I might be able to help. Follow-up
sessions will be designed around the type of therapy that would be the most effective for
you. If you are a couple seeking
counseling, we would discuss the areas of agreement, areas of conflict and frustration,
issues that need to be resolved, your vision of what you want and find ways for you to
restore intimacy and tenderness to your relationship.

What is relationship coaching? |
|
Internet and Online |
Coaching gives you that
extra voice of direction, that extra little support you might need to identify the
problem, overcome a difficult point in a relationship, or, if you're single, to get past
the obstacles that are keeping you from developing the relationship you want.
Telephone sessions help us identify the roadblocks and develop a step-by-step plan to
overcome them. More on relationship coaching
for singles and couples. |

Is what I tell you
confidential? |
|
FUN STUFF |
Absolutely!
I have a white noise generator outside the door so no one else in the office
can hear what we say. Notes and records are secured and locked..
I will not discuss your case with anyone else, including members of your
family, without your express permission.

How do I know if I could benefit from therapy or

The fact that you are
reading this indicates you feel you might benefit from my help. I offer a free
15-minute initial telephone consultation during which we can make that
determination. Call me and let's talk about it. |

What is life coaching? |
| |
There are times that
each of us needs a little extra support, some help achieving our goals. Life
coaching provides just that. Career questions, personal challenges, overscheduling
and its resulting stress, any part of your life that seems to be out of balance
might be helped by having a life coach. We will work together to help you develop a
plan of action toward success. In the
simplest terms, therapy is for someone with a diagnosable emotional issue. Coaching
is for someone who wants to go from okay to great.

Can we do therapy sessions or
coaching by phone? |
| |
Yes. This is an
excellent way for people who cannot come to my office. Telephone appointments are
scheduled the same as office visits. I recommend that you do not use a cordless or
cellular phone in order to protect confidentiality.
I also have added telephone coaching to my services and have been
very encouraged by the results. This allows people to get the benefits of
professional life coaching from their home or office. |

What is EMDR? |
| |
EMDR
stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is
an excellent method of targeting problems that stem from past traumas as well as clearing
things that are blocking you from peak performance in your life, job and relationships.

Do you offer
evening or weekend appointments? |
| |
Much of the couples
counseling I do is scheduled during evening hours. I generally do not schedule
appointments on weekends. |
| |
How long does therapy or
coaching take? |
| |
The length of time
varies dramatically. Some issues can be resolved in a few sessions. Others
may take longer. I might be able to answer this question better after our first few conversations. |
|
Do you prescribe medication? |
| |
Only licensed
MDs may prescribe medication. If I feel that medication would significantly increase
your ability to function well, I will discuss it with you and, if you want, recommend that
you see a psychiatrist or your primary care physician for additional evaluation.

Can I reach you in an
emergency? |
| |
A therapist in private
practice cannot provide 24-hour service. To reach me during non-office hours, you can
call my office number and leave a confidential message.
I check my voice mail frequently and I will return
your call as quickly as
possible. In a life-threatening emergency, you should call 911 or go to your nearest
hospital emergency room. |
|
How much does therapy or coaching
cost? |
| |
My fee
schedule is in line with those of other Ph.D. therapists in the area.
We can discuss this in detail when you call. I
currently am not a member of any insurance networks, but do accept
out-of-network insurance coverage. |
|
Do you accept credit
cards? |
| |
Yes, I accept Visa and MasterCard. Personal checks also
are accepted. |
| |
Do you
accept insurance? |
| |
I am frequently asked if I "take Insurance".
The answer is : I resigned from all networks over 10 years
ago as I did not feel I could be in network and provide good
services to my clients. I experienced the networks as abusive to
therapists and this I was not willing to tolerate as I wouldn't want
my clients tolerating abuse from anyone. I am about reducing stress
in our lives. As a licensed therapist I am eligible for
reimbursement if you have 'out-of-network' benefits. You would need
to call the number on the back of your card to find out if you have
those benefits. Keep in mind that Insurance coverage is for those
with a 'medical necessity'. In the mental health field that means
one has symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mental disorder as
specified in DSM-IV (The Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association).
Also when you check with your Insurance Company be sure to ask about
your deductible and how many sessions are covered before a Treatment
Plan from your therapist is required. You need to know at that point
very private information as well as your symptoms are submitted to
the Insurance Company for justification of their continued pay for
your services. You need to seriously consider if that is what you
want to happen. If you do have 'out-of-network' benefits and qualify
as 'medical necessity' I will bill your Insurance Company
electronically so that you don't have the responsibility of
submitting the bills. Depending on which Insurance Company you have
will depend on where the checks are sent. If they come to me you
will be responsible for paying the difference at the time of
service.
Many of the people that call for my services are 'symptom free' and
therefore do not qualify under the strict definition of 'medical
necessity'. We all have issues in our life, current as well
as those stemming from the past life experiences. Without symptoms
qualifying as a 'medical necessity' it would be considered 'personal
growth work' for which coaching and other methods are appropriate.
Insurance companies are very clear they do not reimburse for these
services.
If you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to call
and inquire.
